Research: The Ongoing Crime

The Ongoing Crime is an analytical research study published by the Feminist Research Unit at “Women Now for Development” in 2024. The study addresses the knowledge gap in documenting and analyzing the immediate and long-term consequences of the chemical weapons attack that targeted Eastern Ghouta, Damascus, on August 21, 2013.

It examines the differentiated impacts on survivors by conducting interviews with a range of individuals, including survivors, families of the victims, rescuers, paramedics, and healthcare workers. The research also incorporates extensive desk work, including the review of documents, articles, and audiovisual materials.

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the enduring repercussions of this atrocity on both individuals and communities. It delves into the living conditions and sociopolitical contexts of the region before and after the chemical attack perpetrated by the defunct Syrian regime and its forces. Furthermore, it highlights how the absence of justice, accountability, mental health support, healthcare services, and other forms of assistance has exacerbated the lasting impacts of the attack.
